GILL
for College Park City Council District 2
Safe, Stable and Affordable Housing
Our City must have a place for people at all stages of life. I’ll fight to:
-
Increase access to affordable rental and homeownership options
-
Ensure all new city development benefits working families and long-time residents — not just outside investors
-
Bring Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), such as garage and basement apartments, to the City in a neighborhood-preserving way.
Walkable City
Short trips within the city and to transit should be safe and easy by bike or on foot. I will advocate for:
-
New sidewalks to let children safely walk to school or their bus stop and seniors to groceries, services and recreation.
-
Expanded protected bike lanes throughout the City and ensure connections to the regional bike network.
-
Modern traffic management approaches, such as roundabouts and chicanes.
-
Redesigns by the County and State of large arterial roadways which are pedestrian and cyclist hostile and act as barriers between our communities.
Economic Development
Thriving local businesses provide employment and shopping opportunities for residents while expanding the City’s tax base. I will focus on:
-
Supporting locally-owned businesses
-
Building local hiring and job training partnerships.
-
Leveraging the opening of the Purple Line to bolster existing business and attract new business to vacant spaces.
Aging-in-Place Support
Establish a standing Seniors Committee as recommended in the Aging in Place Task Force’s Final Report of 2016. Perform a ten year review on the progress of the Task Force's recommendations.A Just Community
A Just Community
From the 1960s through the 1980s, urban renewal policies implemented by the City decimated the thriving African American community of Lakeland. I will:
-
Champion the residents of Lakeland and the City’s Restorative Justice Commission to continue the process of truth and reconciliation.
Supporting Schools & Students in College Park
While the City of College Park does not directly fund or manage our public schools, its policies have a direct impact on the everyday lives of students and families.
As a father of two elementary schoolers, I’m committed to using every tool available at the City level to be a strong advocate and partner for our schools. As a council member and PGCPS parent, I will endeavor to:
-
Be a strong partner with, and accountability check on, PGCPS
-
Create safe, walkable routes to schools and bus stops.
-
Support and expand after-school programming in the city
-
Support local summer camp services
-
Have buses run reliably and on-time.
-
Plan growth and development in a way to support and strengthen our schools and not strain them.
